Some areas in the home are naturally exposed to germs. The first thing you probably think of is your countertops, tables, bathroom surfaces and toilets. However, outlets and light switches also get a lot of use and are often overlooked during a cleaning routine.

If these covers in your home could use a good scrub-down, this article offers a few easy tips and tricks on how to clean light switches and outlets safely.

Step-by-Step: How to Clean Light Switches Without Getting Shocked

Things You'll Need

  • Disinfectant wipes or isopropyl alcohol

  • Soft cloths or rags

  • Cotton balls

  • Dish detergent

  • Cup of water

  • Rubber gloves

  • Flat-head screwdriver

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

Go to your breaker box and turn the power off where you’ll be working. This ensures you won’t be shocked if wires get wet.

Step 2: Choose a Light Switch Cleaner

Add a couple of drops of dish detergent to a cup of water. If you’re close to the bathroom or kitchen sink, you may opt to fill the sink with a few inches of warm, soapy water. You can also use a liquid surface cleaner, such as Bar Keepers Friend or Formula 409.

Step 3: Dampen a Cloth

Slip on your rubber gloves to protect your hands. Dip your cloth or rag into your cup or basin of water, and be sure to wring any excess water out. You want the cloth to be damp but not dripping wet.

Step 4: Clean the Edges

Start by scrubbing the edges of the cover plate and work your way into the switch. Focus on the areas where grime has built up.

Step 5: Get Into the Corners

Use a small cotton ball to get into any corners and areas you’re unable to clean with a regular cloth.

Step 6: Dry the Surface

Using a dry cloth, wipe down the plate and switch to remove any moisture.

Step 7: Sanitize

If you want to sanitize the switch, use a cotton ball dipped in isopropyl alcohol or a disinfectant wipe. Be careful not to soak the switch. Make sure the switch is completely dry before turning the power back on.

Step 8: Deep Clean

For switches that are especially dirty, use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the screw in the center of the cover. Soak the cover in soapy water for a few minutes and use a soft cloth to scrub it clean. You can also scrub the wall where the cover rests. Be sure not to touch any internal wiring.

Step 9: Replace the Cover

Once the cover dries, screw it back on and restore power to the breaker.

How to Clean an Electrical Outlet Safely

Cleaning an electrical outlet is like cleaning a light switch, and it uses the same materials. However, you want to use more caution because you’ll be exposed to the direct point of contact with electricity.

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

Just like the light switch, turn off the power directly at the breaker.

Step 2: Use a Cotton Rag

Dampen the cotton rag with isopropyl alcohol or a mild cleaning solution. Rub the rag along the edges of the outlet cover to remove any grime or excessive dust. Never insert anything into the outlet slots.

Step 3: Remove the Faceplate

Use a flat-head screwdriver to remove the faceplate by unscrewing the center screws.

Step 4: Clean the Faceplate

Scrub the faceplate with a soft cloth or disinfectant wipe. Allow the cover to dry completely before reinstalling it.

Step 5: Screw the Cover On

Screw the faceplate back onto the wall and restore power.
